In South Shropshire for a writing workshop sponsored by SABLE Literary Magazine and the Arvon Foundation, she spends most of the week barefoot, looking across the way at Shropshire hills. The air, the dirt--breathing here, walking here liberates something long dead within her, lights a fire in her spirit almost crushed by family and academic pressures.

She returns to Philadelphia and doctoral study with a heightened spiritual awareness, an elevation of her psychic gift, only to find her apartment now haunted by the white psychiatrist who could never quite admit his fascination with her. She will never know if it was love, but his pain and suffering dogs her every minute she is in the apartment she becomes convinced he once occupied.

Understanding after England that her perceived madness is actually a psychic gift, she finds balancing the needs of the psychiatrist with that of her neighbor across the hall, a frustrated truck unloader with literary gifts, and an actor playing a tv detective whose spiritual life is in disarray drive her once again to refuge in Nine West, the psych unit.
