What does it mean to be a young black female,
intelligent, gifted with second sight,
on your way to a Ph.D.
and in love for the first time?
She knew at 21 that her life was to end with a Ph.D. and a full-time teaching position at a college or university. One of those kids who played school as a child, everyone predicted that she would be a teacher, but no one counted on the gift of spiritual discernment that would complicate her life and her pursuit of academic achievement.
He came to her with his own needs, and she was confused by the veneer of "successful psychiatrist" he wore. Did he need something from her? Was there something he was aching to tell her? He was far too inhibited and tentative to be a "successful Dr. White Boy"; what kept him from speaking freely and what WAS the source of the warmth in his dark brown eyes?
Throughout THE JOURNEY, we see our heroine struggle with her gift of discernment; doctors hear her say "voices" and decide madness. This particular doctor refuses to give her a diagnosis, only complicating her attempt to understand his hesitancy. Is it love or his own need for her ability to sift out what he says from what he really needs to say?
Follow the development of this almost romance (or is it erotomania?) as Sarah/Leslie copes with compulsive eating, mental health units, and an academic department whose infighting attacks her ability to achieve her dream: a doctorate in African American literature.
The type of autobiography a poet would write says Doni Tamblyn (publicist for THE MASTER PLANETS, an excellent novel by Donald Gallinger), order THE JOURNEY today; it is a story of achievement despite odds that would break the spirit of any Black woman who hopes for a place in the still largely white world of academia.
